This tamper was a weapon in the Wars of Religion. It depicts a satiric medallion produced by Calvinists in 1545. Look closely: One side shows heads of the Pope and the Devil, while the other portrays the heads of a cardinal and a fool. Extremely popular in certain circles, the piece was reproduced throughout the 1600's. And yes, the Catholics retaliated with medallions ridiculing Protestants.
