Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Series
pt87
Guardians of the Graveyard.
The lighthouse at Cape Hatteras may be the most recognized lighthouse in the world. The history of the Cape Hatteras Light is perhaps less known.
Hatteras Island extends along the North Carolina coast for some sixty miles. At Hatteras Islands eastern most extension into the Atlantic Ocean, lies Cape Hatteras. Some sixteen miles off shore of the Cape is an area known as Diamond Shoals. Due to large numbers of ships lost over the years it has become known as The Graveyard of the Atlantic. In the very first years of The United States, it became apparent of the need to protect the ships making this dangerous passage.
The first of three Cape Hatteras Lighthouses was known as the Dearborn Tower after its builder, Henry Dearborn. The Dearborn Tower was built in 1803 of granite and sandstone. Because of its short stature, weak light and coloration, many felt it was worse that “no light at all”. After years of complaints and more lost ships, the tower was improved. An extension was added to bring it to a height of one hundred fifty feet and its sandstone exterior was painted red over white. A new fresnel lens was installed to make it brighter.
By the late 1860’s, the condition of the lighthouse was so poor that The United States Lighthouse Service decided to build rather that repair. The new design would become the standard for the lighthouses throughout the United States.
The current structure at Cape Hatteras was built in 1869 and lit in 1870. It is 198 feet tall. It is the tallest unsupported masonry lighthouse in the world. It is the tallest lighthouse in America. It is a symbol of all the best in America.
In 1999 with the Atlantic Ocean literally at the door, the National Park Service contracted with the International Chimney Corporation to move the Lighthouse out of harms way. Today, the Cape Hatteras Light stands tall some 2900 feet from where it was originally built. Future generations will get to visit and climb this historic structure and learn from generations past.
Both the Dearborn Tower and its extended version have long since ceased to exist, except in our hearts and minds, and in these hand carved representations by Charles White of White Casting and offered by Catnip Hill Trading Company. These are seriously collectible pieces and to my knowledge, do not exist anywhere else. Enjoy!

Pipe Tamper # 30 "The Griffin"
PT30
There are certain things in life one doesn't need to know about. Take Griffins, for instance. The Griffin is a monster-like creature with the body of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle, and a back covered with feathers. In early mythical times, Griffins would find gold in the
mountains and build their nests with it. They would lay precious agates instead of eggs, making their nests very tempting to the Arimaspians, a one-eyed people of Scythia (now southern Russia) amongst whom the Griffins lived. Vigilance and strength are their hallmarks. Attentive, alert and protective, they are said to coexist with us today, carefully watching and guarding against all danger, keeping evil spirits away.
Now, aren't you glad you know about Griffins? One of the most beautiful reproduction tampers in our menagerie.
"Detailed" hardly begins to describe it. The original was in sterling silver; our 2 3/4" tall version is cast in solid pewter and hand finished. It is priced slightly higher than our other tampers, due to the time and effort devoted during manufacturing (and to the agate eggs it may provide you with). Pipe Tamper # 1 The Jackass or Fool
PT1
If only all fools had fools' faces! They'd
prove easier to avoid. This clever reproduction of a 19th century pipe tamper echoes the sentiment. Standing upright, it appears to depict a bearded profile. Or does it? Turn your head; the hirsute chap is a bit of a jackass. Had old Freud the sense to smoke pipes instead of cigars, he would have owned one of these. It measures 3 1/2" in length. Pipe Tamper # 10 "Old Nosey"
PT10
British humor, circa 1840. The Duke of Wellington, the victor of Waterloo, was almost as as unpopular with his troops as Napoleon. By forbidding all smoking in barracks, "Old Nosey", as the Duke was called, won the title of the greatest tobacco stopper alive.
And "stopper", in British English, also means "tamper". Our nosey reproduction measures 2.5" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 11 " King William IV "
PT11
Behold Britain's King William IV (ruled 1830-1837), an upstandingly dull fellow -- the type that often succeeds "amorous" heads of state. His predecessor, recklessly randy George IV, had wearied Britons with a stream of highly publicized affairs. King William, on the other hand, "possessed an unassuming character, exemplary private life and disdain for pomp and ceremony. Court life became somewhat luckluster, adding to the generally low opinion that had formed concerning the monarchy. William did little to counteract such feelings, but never generated the embarrassment and scandal of his predecessor." In an age of revolutions and parliamentary reforms, who was the only European monarch to survive the advent of democracy? You guessed it. This reproduction of a 19th century tamper measures 3" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 12 "William Shakespeare"

Writing in middle of the 18th century, Dryden observed that "Shakespeare was the man who, of all modern and perhaps ancient poets, had the largest and most comprehensive soul. ...He needed not the spectacles of books to read nature; he looked inward, and found her there. ...When he describes any thing, you more than see it: you feel it too." Writing on the eve of the 21st century, we have nothing to add. Depicting the Bard in profile, this reproduction of an antique tamper
measures 2.5" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 13 "Commedia "
PT13
Born in Italy's High Renaissance, the less-than-high "Commedia dell'Arte" was licensed mayhem on stage: Imagine the Marx Brothers and the Three Stooges slugging it out in facemasks and pantaloons. Below, a typical plot:
"As the curtain rises, Harlequin is ill. The Doctor and his servant try to determine what is wrong. The Doctor, after much enticing, gives Harlequin a shot on his backside with a huge syringe. Harlequin is found to be pregnant and delivers three babies, one of which survives. Harlequin
nurses and mothers the baby. He teaches the child to walk. Harlequin complains to the Doctor regarding the problems of rearing a child. The child is spanked about by Harlequin. The play ends with Harlequin teaching the child to read. Through it all, Harlequin is made fun of by his friends ..."
Glorious nonsense, this tamper, like the Commedia Dell'Arte. "Crafted from a 19th century original depicting "Punch", prominent in nose and caboose, the Groucho of his milieu -- a British adaptation of the
Commedia's "Pulcinella".
It measures 2" in length. Please

Pipe Tamper # 14 "The Chap"

Life is ever a challenge. Just when we thought we could identify any pipe tamper, in strode this confident little 19th century (seaman rogue? Johnny Appleseed? porkchop vendor?) to stump us. We could invent an elaborate tale, but why? That's your perogative: you're the one whose friends will see him. The chap -- our handmade reproduction -- measures 2.25" in length. Pipe Tamper # 15 "The Female Leg"

If only they could, men would use the female leg to launch a rocket. Over the past few millenia, we've seen leg-shaped nutcrackers, clasp knives, cocktail shakers, earpicks, door knobs, glasses, corkscrews, scissor handles, pencils, pipes ... and tampers. Popular throughout the early 19th
century, this model supposedly represented an extremity of the scarlet Madam Vestris. Our reproduction measures 2.5" from graceful hip to toe. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 16 "Another Mystery"

Another mystery. A woman's face in a bed of acanthus leaves and a scallop shell stem, hand-cast from a 19th century original. Could this be Spenser's "Faerie Queene" in her Bower of Bliss? Some sort of floral sprite? One of Breughel's milder nightmares? No matter: it's lovely.

Pipe Tamper # 17 "The Hand"
PT17
Back in the early 1700's, when Ireland was deemed little more than a slave state, a knowing Irishman named Jonathan Swift wrote "Gulliver's Travels". Never mind those films and cartoons,
"My principal Design was to Inform, and not to amuse thee." -- The Travels
(IV:12)
He knew, Swift did, that the way to make readers see truth was to reduce its size ... or to exaggerate it. Hence the Lilliputians; hence the giant Brobdingnagians. This hand-shaped tamper is a reproduction of a 17th century piece. At 2.25" in length, it isn't especially Brobdingnagian.
(Gulliver would have preferred it that way. Read the book and see.) Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 19 "The Court Page "

Gustave Dore's steel engravings ruined many a Victorian child's imagination ... not to mention our own. This genius of 19th century book illustration settled once and for all the question of what Dante's Inferno looked like,
or how an albatross could darken an Ancient Mariner's day. As aging children, we close our eyes and see again ... those lines ... that ink. Magnificent chap, Monsieur Dore. This reproduced tamper of a gallant court page -- a Dore character if there ever was one -- measures 2.25" in length.

Pipe Tamper # 20 "The Scottish Terrier"
PT20
Back in the 1930's, when they were still young and childless, my very Parisian grandparents bought a Scottish Terrier. It seemed the thing to do; terriers were a frisky Art Deco accessory. Then, like a fairy tale creature, the dog shed his fashionable guise and became their baby. When
he died, said my grandmother, he shed true tears. So did she, again ... fifty years after the fact. My grandparents' Scottish Terrier was created in our shop. Cast in pewter then hand finished, it measures 2 1/4" tall. Please click on image to view larger format.

there and coarsen her delicate face. Oh, and replace that Mona Lisa smile with a wide-open grin, just so. All right? Excellent. When I count to three, please open your eyes. One ... two ... three. There -- do you see it?"
Cheeky little (1 3/4") tamper with a "Pickwick Papers" feel to it, from a 19th century brass original. Fits well in the hand, as the index finger can rest on the coat tail. Dickensian Rolls-Royce not included. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 3 "Napoleon Bonaparte "

Napoleon Bonaparte ... atop a basketball? More likely the Earth itself. A modern Caesar, the Little Corporal seemed to "bestride the world like a colossus." When Lady Luck is in arrears, you don't just need a leg-up. You need your flank protected; some padding against fate's blows. In short, you need some humor -- the cheekier the better. Like the silvery moon, fortunes wax

Owls, they say, are wiser than wise. Athena's companion is the Owl. Innumerable libraries once contained stuffed versions. The statue of Columbia at New York's Columbia University hides a not-so-invisible owl. And why? Because they ask questions ("Who-o-o-o")? Because they see all
sides (with those revolving heads of theirs)? Because turkeys and boobys don't make the grade? Ask your local owl: if it's so wise, it should know.

Pipe Tamper # 44 "George Washington"

George Washington
“First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen.” is how Henry Lee eulogized his fellow Virginian and commander during the Revolutionary War, George Washington. So familiar are his exploits as America’s first army commander and then first Commander-in-Chief, it is sometimes forgotten that George Washington was a successful planter before turning to more public duties. One of Washington's primary crops was the sweet Virginia tobacco that has delighted so many through the years. We invite you to reflect on the life of this great American as you use our George Washington tamper on your next bowlful of your favorite Virginias (or other) blend. A word of caution; we can’t be responsible if sparks begin to fly should you use the Washington tamper on an English blend!

Pipe Tamper # 48 "The Labrador Retriever"
PT48
Known for its loyalty, good nature and superb hunting skills, the Labrador Retriever is one of the world’s most beloved breeds of dog. Certainly the Labrador must have been in the mind of the nameless scribe who first called canines “Man’s Best Friend.” Few things in life are more pleasurable than settling back with a bowlful of your favorite blend with your faithful companion by your side, asking little more than that you occasionally reward his devotion with a friendly scratch or pat as you contentedly puff the time away. But even if you can’t have Catfish (or Cornbread, or Fido or Rover or whoever) by your side, you can still enjoy the company of a devoted friend by using our Labrador tamper on your next bowlful. One word of warning; we find he might be a bit slow about coming when you call.

Pipe Tamper # 6 The Roman Emperor"
PT6
A profile of the less-than-humble Napoleon I, depicted as a crowned Roman emperor. Large ego in a small package - and the genius to conquer Europe with it. Rather confidence-building, this tamper. Cast from an early 19th century original. It measures 2 3/8" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 7 "Wars of Religion"
PT7
This tamper was a weapon in the Wars of Religion. It depicts a satiric medallion produced by Calvinists in 1545. Look closely: One side shows heads of the Pope and the Devil, while the other portrays the heads of a cardinal and a fool. Extremely popular in certain circles, the piece was reproduced throughout the 1600's. And yes, the Catholics retaliated with medallions ridiculing Protestants. Our own reproduction measures 3" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 8 "The Claw-Footed Leg"
PT8
Much 18th century furniture is characterized by its claw-footed legs. Did our forebears wish their chairs to walk? Or did they simply realize that claws holding orbs look impressive, and not worry sick over it? This exquisitely detailed tamper is a reproduction of
an 18th century piece. Note the scales and claws: wonderful work, and only 2.75" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper # 9 "The Swan"
PT9
From the mythical Leda to the larger-than-life Tchaikovsky, romantics among us have been seduced by swans. No more graceful-looking a bird ever glided down the Danube. We won't ruin it all by talking about their temperament, which is not all that different from geese. After all, no one's asking you to live with the things; just look at them and smile. Our (well-behaved) swan tamper measures 2.25" in length. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper #24 "The Duck"
PT24
As Chico Marx once said, "Why a duck?" Why a Donald AND a Daffy? And why did they lose to Mickey and Bugs? Simply put, ducks are at the mercy of a human contradiction. Some of us like to watch them paddle about, alive and well; others long to shoot and display them, rather less alive and not at all well. The implications are clear: we've an inner need to see ducks.

Pipe Tamper #26 "The Horse Head"
PT26
Moving ... Moving! Distance rushing toward your face ... then cast away behind your back. That first galloping ride of your life. The day you joined The Horse. Countless eons later, a Model T Ford met the sunshine of Detroit -- and
that day, you joined The Machine. Was it really so easy to leave him behind? Or perhaps there's The Horse in you still?
Created for us by a local artist, our equine tamper measures 3 1/2" in height. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper #27 "The Hand & Pipe"
PT27
Seventeenth-century Europe: the wrong place at the wrong time. Endless wars of religion. Unspeakable outbreaks of plague. Heretics in flames. London in ashes. That a tamper so playfully human could have come from this hell ...! It seems there's hope for us yet.
Cast in pewter and finished by hand, our unlikely survivor is a reproduction of a 17th century sterling silver design. It stands about 2" tall. Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper #28 "The Little Napoleon"
PT28
Napoleon Bonaparte -- "Old Boney" to his enemies -- was the modern world's first commercial superstar. Two centuries before Michael Jordan, the Little Corporal's distinctive silhouette graced everything from axeheads to zithers. Even after his death, "Napoleon, Inc." marched on. Case in
point: a mid- to late 19th century tamper, supporting a bust of ... well ... you know.
Reproduced from the sterling silver original, ours has excellent detail and is rather diminutive, just a fraction over 2" in height. (Don't tell the Emperor, though.) Please click on image to view larger format.

Pipe Tamper# 22 "The Elephant"
PT22
The world's largest remaining land animal is also one of its oddest. From what inept design committee came the papery ears, petroleum barrel feet, beady little eyes and indescribable trunk? Wonder of wonders: it works. This regal elephant head is cast in pewter and hand finished. No jumbo, it measures 3" tall. Please click on image to view larger format.

PT # 34 "The Large Napoleon"
PT34
Why was Napoleon Bonaparte so often depicted with one hand inside his coat? Read "Napoleon's Glands -- and Other Adventures in Biohistory", by Arno Karlen (Little, Brown and Company, 1984). In it, you'll learn that the Emperor paid for his sins with a host of maladies: war wounds,
neurodermatitis, hemorrhoids, dysuria, (possibly) bilharzia, and, in the end, stomach cancer. "As early as 1802," writes Karlen, "[Napoleon] began to suffer such pain in the right side that it made him irritable and probably affected some of his decisions. ... He started keeping his hand inside his coat to hold the aching spot." Health, it seems, can change the course of history: an itch can make the world scratch.
Our tamper, like its subject, is a heavyweight. Rather larger than normal, it's too heavy to be carried in one's pocket. This 2 1/2" reproduction is cast in pewter; the 19th century original was carved in boxwood. Please click on image to view larger format.
